The Department of Justice reveals Gabby Lopez citizenship amid all the issues of his network.
GABBY LOPEZ CITIZENSHIP – With all the issues regarding the citizenship of ABS-CBN chairman emeritus Gabby Lopez, DOJ finally put an end to it.
One of the issues being discussed amid the ABS-CBN network franchise is the citizenship of chairman emeritus Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III. In a previous report, a statement released by the media company told that he was born to Eugenio and Conchita Lopez in 1952. Both of his parents are Filipino.
It further stressed that Lopez does not need to “acquire Filipino citizenship because he never lost it or renounced it” citing what’s indicated in the 1935 Constitution. He is a Filipino and being born in the United States means that he is American as well based on the foreign law. This only technically means that he’s holding dual citizenship.
With this, Justice Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay-Villar said to the members of the House of Representatives that Lopez is Filipino by birth born to Filipino parents which is the same with the network’s previous statement.
Using his American passport does not take away his citizenship being a Filipino and not having a Philippine passport is not a ground to tell that he is not a Filipino said Aglipay-Villar. This is a response to Sagip Party-List Rep. Rodante Marcoleta who is not in favor of the renewal and who have always criticized Lopez’s citizenship.
To recall, it was around first week of May that the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has released the cease and desist order. The network immediately complied and that day as well, they went off air.
