What Is Global Warming? Meaning And Effects Of The Rising Temperature
GLOBAL WARMING – In this topic, we will now learn about the meaning and the drastic effects of the ongoing phenomena called global warming.
Meaning
According to NRDC, it is the rapid increase of the average temperature of the world and it is still ongoing over the decades.
This occurs when carbon dioxide, as well as other air pollutants and greenhouse gasses amalgamate in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that bounced off the surface of the earth, hence, making the world hotter. This is infamously known as the greenhouse effect.
This is also associated with extreme weather. This means hotter heat waves, more frequent droughts, heavier rainfall, and way more powerful hurricanes. Ocean temperatures are also getting water, hence, tropical storms can gain more energy.
Effects of Global Warming
- Melting glaciers, early melting of snow, and severe droughts that results to more water shortages and increases risk of wildfires.
- Rising sea levels results to coastal floods.
- Troublesome new pests, heat waves, heavy downpours, and increased flooding on forests, farms, and cities that will damage or destroy agriculture and fisheries.
- Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and Alpine meadows could lead to extinction of many plant and animal species.
- More common allergies, asthma, and infectious disease outbreaks because of increased growth of pollen-producing ragweed, higher levels of air pollution, and the spread of conditions favorable to pathogens and mosquitoes.
