POPE FRANCIS FUNERAL – Here are some details about the late pontiff’s burial, which has taken place at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
Pope Francis‘ coffin has been entombed. His final resting place is at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in central Rome, and his funeral was attended by hundreds of thousands of people. They lined up in the streets to watch as his coffin was brought from the Vatican to the Basilica.
The late pontiff was laid to rest with more than 250,000 people who attended his funeral. He was remembered for being the “people’s pope” and for his humanity and humility. He passed through the streets in the popemobile, filled with mourners.
The funeral mass began at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 26, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. This is the first of nine masses to be held daily at St. Peter’s through Sunday, May 4.
It included readings from the Acts of the Apostles, the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians, and the Gospel according to John. The homily was followed by prayers of the faithful in French, Arabic, Portuguese, Polish, German, and Chinese, before the Eucharistic liturgy, Holy Communion, and the Rite of Final Commendation.
The funeral expected to have delegations from at least 130 countries and international organizations. This included 12 reigning monarchs and 55 heads of state, 14 heads of government, and other high officials.
The “rite of the Entombment of the Roman Pontiff” began at 1 PM local time. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Kevin Farrell and concluded at 1:30 PM local time.
