Jeepney Driver Touches Many Hearts Over Simple Request for Extra Fare

A jeepney driver’s request for passengers to add a little extra amount to their fare has touched many people online.

Recently, Renz Salonga, a Facebook user, shared a photo of the driver’s message inside the jeepney. The post quickly went viral on social media and received mixed reactions from the online community.

The note politely asked passengers if they could add a little extra to their payment, but made it clear that it was not required and would depend on their willingness.

The driver’s kind reminder that passengers who could not afford the fare could still ride, as long as they informed him touched the readers. This simple act of understanding showed the driver’s compassion, even though he himself faces daily struggles to earn a living.

The post also opened discussions about the challenges faced by public transport drivers. Earning enough each day is not always certain, especially with rising fuel prices and daily expenses. For many drivers, every small amount matters.

Instead of blaming either drivers or passengers, his request encouraged people to be more understanding of one another.

While my friend and I were sitting in a jeepney, something caught our attention and truly touched our hearts. I saw a message inside asking passengers if they could add a little extra to their fare—clearly stating that it wasn’t required, only based on willingness.

But what moved me the most was when the driver said, “Kung kulang o wala kayong pamasahe, magsabi lang kayo at isasakay ko kayo.”

It’s ironic how those who have the least are often the ones most willing to give.

I’m sharing this so we can reflect more deeply on what’s happening around us. This is a serious and timely issue, and instead of pointing fingers, we should recognize that we are all affected. Jeepney drivers, and drivers in general, are close to my heart—my grandfather is a tricycle driver, and I’ve seen how difficult it is to work every day without any certainty of bringing enough income home.

Let’s not blame the drivers or the passengers. Instead, let this be an eye-opener for all of us when choosing who we entrust our country with. Above all, let’s continue to spread kindness. Brighter days are ahead.
