Alex Eala Ends Decades-Long Drought w/ SEA Games Tennis Triumph

ALEX EALA – Tennis player Alexandra “Alex” Eala etched her name in Philippine sports history after delivering a masterclass performance to secure her first-ever SEA Games gold medal in women’s tennis.

Alexandra “Alex” Eala delivered a commanding performance to capture her first Southeast Asian Games gold medal, dominating Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew in the women’s singles tennis final on Thursday. The Filipina standout needed just two sets to secure the title, cruising to a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory and firmly establishing her place among the region’s elite athletes.

Eala wasted no time asserting control in the championship match, racing to a 3–0 lead in the opening set behind aggressive baseline play and precise shot placement. Although Sawangkaew briefly found her rhythm and managed to take a game, Eala quickly regrouped. Showing composure beyond her years, she dictated the pace once more and closed out the first set by winning the next three games.

The second set proved slightly more competitive in the early stages, with both players holding serve through the first four games. However, once Eala found her stride, the momentum shifted decisively in her favor. The Filipina ace unleashed a flurry of winners and capitalized on her opponent’s errors, sweeping the next four games to seal the gold medal undoubtedly.

This triumph marks Eala’s first-ever gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games and adds to an already impressive campaign in the 2025 edition of the regional meet. Earlier in the competition, she claimed two bronze medals — one in the women’s team event and another in mixed doubles — bringing her total medal haul this year to three. The gold also serves as a significant milestone in her SEA Games journey, improving on her bronze finish in the women’s singles event at the 2021 Games.

Beyond personal achievement, Eala’s victory carries historical significance for Philippine tennis. She becomes only the third Filipina to win a SEA Games gold medal in women’s singles tennis, following the footsteps of Pia Tamayo in 1981 and Maricris Fernandez in 1999. Her success not only ends a long gold medal drought for the country in the event but also signals a promising future for Philippine tennis on the regional and international stage.

With her poise, power, and growing experience, Eala’s golden run at the SEA Games further cements her status as one of the Philippines’ brightest sporting stars.
