Pregnant Woman Suffers Injuries After Being Swallowed by Sinkhole
A six-month pregnant woman was injured after the ground suddenly collapsed beneath her in Barangay Masarawag, Guinobatan, Albay.
On Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025, the victim, 20-year-old Maria Margaret Zamora, was about to step out of their gate when the soil beneath her feet gave way, creating a deep sinkhole.
Her grandmother, Maria Theresa, recalled hearing her scream for help but couldn’t see her at first. When she followed the voice, she realized her granddaughter had fallen into the ground right in front of their house.

Zamora was trapped waist-deep in soft, sinking soil that continued to give way as she struggled to stay above ground. Her grandmother told her to hold still while she called for help from their neighbors.
Barangay officials and residents rushed to the scene and managed to pull her out after more than 30 minutes using a ladder. The sinkhole was estimated to be around ten feet deep narrow at the opening but wide underneath.
The victim was immediately brought to the hospital, where she underwent an ultrasound to check the condition of her baby. She also sustained several bruises and minor injuries. Her grandmother was also slightly hurt after tripping while seeking help in panic.
According to her, two large sinkholes had already formed behind their house during Typhoon Kristine. The riverbank beside their home has also been gradually eroding.
Personnel from the Guinobatan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Bicol have inspected the area to investigate.
The family is now appealing for relocation, as their barangay often faces danger from lahar flow and ground movement, especially after Typhoon Uwan recently brought heavy rains and volcanic debris from Mount Mayon.
