Authorities Found Alleged Sinkholes in Taal, Batangas
Three alleged sinkholes in Taal, Batangas have been spotted after a few days of heavy rains, which causes fear among residents.
According to the local government, soil erosion has been discovered at a house located in Barangay Apakay, Taal, Batangas. The holes have a depth of about 10 meters and a width of about four meters.
The holes occur inside the property of a resident named Pepito Balbacal. The alleged sinkholes appear near the gate and even reached the road heading to the forest. “Natatakot ka, siyempre buhay nakalaan d’yan. Mamaya mahulog ka d’yan, malalim ‘yan,” Balbacal said.
The soil erosion happened after a few days of heavy rains. The incessant rains also cause flooding in some areas in Lemery Batangas.
Some soil erosion incidents have been recorded in Barangay Laguile and Barangay Cawit after Taal Volcano erupted in 2020, according to the local government. Around 89 residences have been affected by those incidents.
Taal Mayor Pong Mercado asked the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to study the mysterious appearance of holes. The agency will also send personnel to Barangay Apakay on Friday afternoon (May 20, 2022).
Phivolcs and the local disaster office said that it is dangerous for residents to live in areas wherein the holes were located. The local government also allocates funds to build a relocation site for the affected residents.
Currently, the authorities installed a barricade around the sinkholes and warned the residents about the danger.
