Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia loses his bag to theft while dining at a restaurant in Pasay City.

On Tuesday, Commission on Elections chairman George Erwin Garcia became a victim of theft after his bag was stolen while dining at a restaurant in Pasay City. He lost some important belongings, including his cellphone, cash, and identification cards

For someone in his position, the loss of IDs and a personal phone adds another layer of worry, as these items often hold sensitive and essential information.

Garcia later shared that crimes like this can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. For him, the experience was a reminder of the importance of staying alert in public places. Despite being a high-ranking official, he was not spared from the reality that petty theft remains a problem in busy areas.

Walang pinipili ang masasamang loob na tao, lugar, at oras. Kailangan talagang alisto,” Garcia said.

Authorities from the Pasay City Police have already launched follow-up operations to track down the suspect. They are reviewing the circumstances of the incident to identify how the theft occurred and to prevent similar cases from happening in the area.

Many said that such crimes emphasize the need for extra caution not only for public officials but also for ordinary citizens who are equally vulnerable.

For residents and commuters who pass through Pasay daily, the incident is a reminder of how easily valuables can be lost to opportunistic thieves.

While the stolen items may be replaced, the inconvenience and stress caused by the loss remain a headache. For Garcia, the incident is a lesson that no one is exempt from crime, regardless of status.

His experience shows the daily struggles of many Filipinos who continue to face the risks of theft in public spaces.
