Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano Speaks on OVP Encashment of Multi-Million Confidential Funds
ALAN PETER CAYETANO – The Senate Minority Leader spoke on the huge encashment of the office of Vice President Sara Duterte.
The impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte is ongoing. The prosecution and the defense post arguments on the controversial confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President. Amid the trial, Duterte is currently on an overseas trip.
Vice Pres. Sara Duterte is on an overseas trip from July 16 to 31 as approved by the Office of the President. Her itinerary includes the visit to several foreign nations including The Netherlands where her father, former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, is currently detained.
The elder Duterte is detained under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for more than a year now. His arrest and the transfer of his custody built a huge gap between Marcos Jr. and the Duterte family.
It was in 2024 when Pres. Bongbong Marcos and Vice Pres. Sara Duterte had a falling out. She resigned from being the education secretary and left the Marcos Cabinet. She’s being questioned over her alleged misuse of the multi-million confidential funds of the Department of Education and the Office of the Vice President.
In 2025, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and sent to The Hague. The House of Representatives had impeached Vice Pres. Sara Duterte twice. During the current impeachment trial, some senators spoke on the supposed huge encashment of confidential funds by the OVP.
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano is one of the senator-judges who spoke on the huge encashment of confidential funds by the office of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the encashment amounted to P125-million confidential funds.
Thus, four cheques totaled to half a billion. According to Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, even if it is “unusual”, it allegedly does not mean that it is illegal.
“Just because it’s unusual, it doesn’t mean it’s illegal,” Cayetano said.
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano cited a similar experience when he was the foreign affairs secretary. He led the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) under the term of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. He was Duterte’s running mate in 2016.
