Senior Citizen Loses Life Savings After Falling Victim to Scam Involving Fake SSS App
A senior citizen allegedly lost all of his savings after falling victim to a scam that operates through a downloadable application.
Recently, Jobelle Contreras-Garcia, a Facebook user, shared how her father’s savings disappeared after being tricked by the said application. The post quickly went viral and drew reactions online.
The senior citizen from Laguna lost millions in savings after falling victim to a scam involving a fake Social Security System (SSS) mobile app. The incident happened on August 14, 2025 when the man received a phone call from someone pretending to be an SSS employee.

At that time, he really needed to generate his SSS PRN, and the official app was not working properly. The caller took advantage of this and convinced him that there was an updated SSS app he could install to avoid going to the office and lining up.
The scammer sent him a link through email, which he downloaded while still being guided over the phone. The supposed installation process dragged on for more than an hour. During this time, his phone became unresponsive or unable to turn off, reset, or even take screenshots.
Suspicion grew when his child tried to reach him but could not get through. After forcing the installation to stop by removing the SIM card, they checked his bank accounts. To their shock, every single one had been emptied.

The victim’s accounts in BPI, BDO, GCash, Maya, and Landbank were all drained within two hours. No passwords, one-time pins, or personal details were given to the scammer, showing how dangerous and sophisticated such schemes have become.
The family immediately reported the unauthorized transactions, blocked access to accounts, and changed security details. They are now preparing to file a cybercrime case, hoping that at least some of the money can still be recovered.
The social media users expressed their reactions to the post:
