The Animal Kingdom Foundation gives an update about the viral K9 dog named Kobe.
VIRAL K9 DOG – Belgian Malinois named Kobe is working with the police, and after his photo went viral, he will be undergoing rehabilitation.
According to Republic Act No. 8485, as amended by RA 10631, the Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines, “all animals, especially those used for work or public service, are entitled to proper care, nutrition, shelter, and veterinary attention.”
This was what the Animal Kingdom Foundation, a non-government organization, highlighted after seeing the viral photo of a Belgian Malinois brought over during an explosive investigation in Manila.
The photo sparked concern among netizens as it looked emaciated, with his ribs clearly visible in the photos that circulated online. AFK furthered, “K9 dogs are also heroes and deserve better treatment.”
The Regional Explosive and Canine Unit – National Capital Region (RECU-NCR) has spoken up and clarified the issue. Accordingly, the dog was in good condition and recently underwent a 15-day refresher training last May 26 to June 13. He was trained to further his skills as an explosive detection dog.
The agency said this was also the reason Kobe appeared “a little slim” in the viral photos. The unit explained this to AFK during a visit, and based on an update: “Kobe’s lab results were normal, his vaccinations up to date, and he was being properly fed.”
Kobe will first undergo rehabilitation for two to three months before his redeployment.
“We will closely monitor Kobe’s recovery and continue to push for accountability and systemic welfare improvements for all working animals. Every service dog deserves proper care, dignity, and protection,” the animal group said.
