Police Authorities Arrest 2 Women Arrested Selling Illegal Abortion Pills in Quiapo
Two women were arrested in Quiapo, Manila, for allegedly selling abortion pills near a pharmacy on Palanca Street.
On Wednesday (February 26, 2025), the authorities arrested the suspects during a surveillance operation.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), Quiapo has become a hotspot for people seeking ways to terminate unwanted pregnancies. After monitoring online activities, the police conducted a test purchase on February 11, which confirmed the illegal sale.

Another test buy was made on the day of the arrest, leading to the apprehension of the suspects.
One of the arrested individuals is a 70-year-old former barangay official from Caloocan, who had previously been caught selling the same pills back in 2009. Her 37-year-old niece, who works as a vendor in Quiapo, was also arrested.
Authorities revealed that the supplier of these pills is a foreign national. The pills, which are often sold to minors, could either be delivered or picked up in person from the sellers. A full set of pills costs around P3,000 and comes with instructions for use.
These medications are actually intended for treating ulcers but are being misused for pregnancy termination.
The police emphasized the dangers of using such drugs without proper medical supervision. Without guidance from doctors, taking these pills could lead to serious health risks, including severe complications or even death.
During the arrest, the younger suspect broke down in tears, claiming she was only accompanying her aunt, who had difficulty walking after undergoing hip surgery. The older woman admitted that selling medication without a prescription was wrong but said she was forced to do it due to financial struggles.

Authorities are now tracking down the foreign supplier and investigating the wider network behind the illegal sale of abortion pills in Manila. Meanwhile, the two women remain in police custody and are facing charges for violating the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009.
