Elderly Newspaper Vendor Lost His Life in Cainta Hit-and-Run Incident
An elderly newspaper vendor in Cainta, Rizal lost his life in a hit-and-run accident while making a living to support his family.
The 75-year-old victim identified as Narcisco Fernandez, was a newspaper vendor in the area and a dedicated breadwinner for his family. The incident happened in the early hours of November 21, 2024, along Ortigas Avenue Extension.
According to Cainta Police Chief PLtCol. Joseph Macatangay, Fernandez was crossing the road to purchase newspapers at the Cainta Public Market when he was struck by an L300 FB van. Moments later, a second vehicle ran over him.

CCTV footage revealed that the van hit him directly, and the following vehicle also failed to stop, resulting in severe injuries to his head and body. Fernandez died on the spot due to the impact.
Rachel Fernandez, the victim’s daughter, expressed her grief and disbelief over the loss of her father. She described how a neighbor came to their home to inform them of the incident. Upon arriving at the scene, they found Fernandez lifeless on the road, his body covered.
She recalled recognizing her father only by the belongings in his bag.
Rachel shared how her father had always sacrificed for their family, even in times of hardship. She appealed to the drivers involved, urging them to come forward and take responsibility for their actions. She said their family seeks justice and closure for her father’s untimely death.
Cainta Police continue their investigation to locate the L300 van driver. Authorities are calling on witnesses to assist by providing any information, such as the vehicle’s plate number, to help identify the responsible parties.

Once arrested, the driver could face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and abandoning a victim. The family remains firm in their pursuit of justice, hoping to hold those accountable for this heartbreaking loss.
