EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.3 magnitude quake in Abra, August 19, 2024. Here are the details.

Following the 4.2 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake recently hit Abra and it has a magnitude of 4.3.

The earthquake that struck Abra, Monday, August 19, 2024, was tectonic in origin. A tectonic quake is a shaking which is a product when the Earth’s crust breaks because of the geological forces on the rocks and the adjoining plates which result to chemical and physical changes.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Abra was located at 17.43°North, 120.62°East – 001 km South 24° West of Villaviciosa. It had a depth of focus of 013 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, no intensity was felt at the epicenter of the quake as well as the nearby areas. Instrumental Intensity I was recorded in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur and Bangued, Abra.
