Woman Falls Victim to Budol-Budol Scam, Loses Over P23,000
BUDOL-BUDOL – A woman recently fell victim to a scam while walking near Fuente Osmeña in Cebu City, losing over P23,000 cash.
The term “budol-budol” refers to a type of scam prevalent in the Philippines, where victims are tricked or hypnotized into giving away their money or valuables. This method often involves the use of psychological manipulation, deception, and sometimes even a form of hypnosis to confuse and control the victim.
Scammers usually work in pairs or groups. They approach their target in a public place, often engaging them in friendly conversation to gain their trust. They may pretend to be in need of help, ask for directions, or claim to be someone from the victim’s past.
Recently, a young woman reportedly lost a huge amount of cash to alleged members of the ‘Budol-budol’ gang.
According to the victim, she felt as if she had been hypnotized by two women who approached her. She explained to the police that she handed over her money to these women without fully understanding why, almost as if she were under a spell.
The victim recounted that she was carrying over P23,000 in cash, which she had put in a bag. After the encounter with the scammers, she discovered that her bag had been replaced with another one that contained only a bundle of paper wrapped to look like money.
Initially, the suspects claimed that the bag contained up to P50,000, but this was not true. The victim was left with nothing but worthless paper, and the scammers made off with her money.
The police are still investigating the incident, trying to track down the suspects and prevent further scams in the area. They have urged the public to be cautious and aware of such tactics used by criminals.
