Eat Bulaga host Joey De Leon receives ire online after making this remark in a joking way about Miles Ocampo.

Netizens are definitely not letting it pass.

It’s already 2024 and still body-shaming exists? People online are clamoring over the short remark of Joey De Leon about the weight gain of actress Miles Ocampo. On May 1, 2024, Miles celebrated her 27th birthday on Eat Bulaga.

Everyone was greeting Miles and Tito Sotto even quipped “Pataas, Miles!” referring to the age of the actress going up and hopefully her career. Other hosts, cheered on Miles but netizens’ attention were caught when De Leon joked, “Pataba, ay pababa”.

No one among the hosts, including Miles, reacted to Joey’s comment and the flow of the program just went on as it should.

Netizens react to “pataba” remark

Many people online were not happy about the joke. To recall, Miles was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and she underwent an operation where here thyroid glands had to be removed. She opened up about this in 2023. Following the diagnosis and the surgery, she suffered from different side effects on her body, including weight gain.

With or without condition, Miles stressed no to body shaming.

Here are some comments from X:

ang lala. sobrang toxic ng taong ‘to pero sinasamba pa rin ng fans ng show. yikes.

may u never experience a sickness so bad u have to take medicine that will make u gain weight

Yung taong walang Character Development sa katawan! Never ako natawa sa mga jokes mo

Why are we still normalizing fat shaming here, it’s 2024

Body-shaming occurs when someone makes unsolicited and inappropriate comments about another person’s  weight and body. Comments like “Ay, ang taba mo na!” or “Grabe, ang payat-payat mo naman,” are body-shaming comments.

Through time, these comments became “normal” or would always come off as a backhanded compliment like saying “Tumataba pero bagay sa’yo,” and at times, disguised as a joke. But really, this is insulting and never okay. Body shaming is rude, disrespectful, and demoralizing.
