Authorities Arrest Former MTPB Employee for Extorting Motorist
A former MTPB employee was arrested after allegedly extorting money from a motorist he had apprehended in Manila.
Extortion is a serious crime involving the use of threats, intimidation, or coercion to obtain money, property, or services from another individual or entity. It is a form of illegal manipulation where the suspect exploits fear or vulnerability to compel their victim into compliance.
Recently, an ex- MTPB employee named Lloyd Tolentino landed in jail after the motorist he allegedly extorted identified him, leading to his arrest by the Manila Police District. The incident took place on Bucaneg Street near the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Tolentino used to work for the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau until July 2021. According to Malate Police Station deputy commander Police Major Leonardo De Guzman, Tolentino apprehended the victim and claimed to be from the MTPB.
The suspect accused the motorist of swerving and demanded P200 from him. The victim resisted, knowing he hadn’t violated any traffic rules. However, Tolentino insisted on the payment, and the victim complied out of fear.
Eventually, when the victim spotted police officers nearby, he returned to confront Tolentino, leading to his arrest.
Authorities confiscated Tolentino’s old MTPB uniform, ID, a list of fines for various violations, motorists’ licenses, and the P200 he allegedly extorted. Tolentino confessed to his actions, attributing them to financial difficulties.
Tolentino did not surrender his old uniform and ID as a former MTPB employee, choosing to hide instead. According to the MPD, he chose less crowded areas to avoid detection by his former colleagues.
