Woman Dies as Wall Collapses While Rescuing Dog in Antipolo
A tragic incident occurred in Antipolo, Rizal, where a woman lost her life after being trapped under a collapsed wall caused by a landslide.
The unfortunate event took place in Barangay Sta. Cruz, near a construction site on Sunday evening (July 16, 2023). As the ground softened, witnesses reported that two sections of the wall collapsed, impacting several homes.
Thankfully, residents were able to evacuate before the second part of the wall gave way, avoiding further casualties.
According to Barangay Chairman Cirilo Tenorio, the victim, Dina Lachica, had returned to her house to save her beloved dog. It took three hours of excavation, amidst muddy conditions, to recover her lifeless body, still cradling her loyal pet.
Chairman Tenorio shared that while Dina was cooking, she heard some unusual sounds and decided to prioritize the safety of her nephew before going back for her dog. Unfortunately, the wall collapsed during her rescue attempt.
“Nagluluto kasi ito at dun sa pagluluto niya, medyo may naririnig siya na medyo lumalagitik na. Inuna niya ‘yung pamangkin niya na mailabas tapos binalikan niya yung aso niya, kaya nung mamatay hawak-hawak niya yung aso,” Tenorio said.
The devastating incident has resulted in the displacement of 22 families, who are temporarily seeking shelter in modular homes provided by the barangay. The owner and contractor of the construction site where the landslide occurred have yet to release an official statement.
However, Chairman Tenorio stated that the landowner has been in contact with the authorities, promising financial assistance and the reconstruction of the affected houses.
Chairman Tenorio further explained that the site had long been planned for development into a subdivision. The landowner had previously made assurances to the residents, promising each family a 35-square-meter plot for relocation purposes.
The provincial government of Rizal will conduct an investigation into the incident to determine the causes and identify any possible negligence or lapses
