Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Eastern Samar, July 17, 2023

EARTHQUAKE TODAY – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.7 magnitude quake in Eastern Samar, Monday, July 17, 2023.

Following the 4.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Sulu a few months ago, another significant quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Eastern Samar. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 4.7.

The earthquake that struck Eastern Samar, Monday, July 17, 2023, at 03:18 a.m. was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit General Macarthur in Eastern Samar.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Eastern Samar was located at 11.22°North, 125.57°East – 004 km South 45° East of General Macarthur. It had a depth of focus of 039 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities and instrumental intensities were recorded in these areas:

  • General Macarthur, Eastern Samar

Intensity I

  • Sulat, Eastern Samar
  • Hilongos, Mahaplag, Ormoc City, Leyte
  • Marabut, Samar
  • Hinunangan, Southern Leyte

Intensity II

  • Carigara, Dulag, Leyte

Intensity III

  • Quinapondan, Hernani, Eastern Samar
  • Basey, Samar
