MMDA to Fine Riders Seeking Cover from Rain Under Overpass
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to fine riders who are seeking cover from the rain under the overpass.
When rainy days arrive, motorcycle riders take shelter under an overpass or bridge. During rainstorms, you’ll see huddled crowds of bikers waiting out the rain. They’d frequently stop whenever they wanted, taking up a lane, occasionally two, depending on the number of riders and the level of rain falling from the sky.
Riders do this to prevent getting wet or to make time to put on their rain gear, which is usually stored in their backpacks or storage boxes. This technique is exceedingly dangerous, not only for riders but also for other road users.
Motorcycle riders who seek shelter under overpasses when it rains may be penalized P1,000 for disrupting traffic, according to Acting MMDA Chairman Romando Artes. The MMDA warned bikers that stopping under pedestrian overpasses to seek shelter from the rain was unsafe.
According to Artes, a cyclist under an overpass may be hit by another car. Riders pausing under overpasses, he claims, cause traffic gridlock. In the event of rain, motorbike riders may instead halt at designated motorcycle lay-by sites, according to the MMDA.
Based on the report, Artes said that the MMDA would also discuss with gasoline stations the placement of tents on their grounds for motorcycle riders to take shelter when it is raining.
