Parañaque City Representative Pushes Proposal to Mandate Motorcycle Headlights to Remain On
Parañaque City Representative Edwin Olivarez has recently pushed for a proposal in the Philippine Congress that would require motorcycles to keep their headlights on at all times, even during daytime travel.
The proposal is officially known as House Bill 7106, or the Automatic Headlight on Act, and it seeks to make it mandatory for all motorcycle manufacturers, assemblers, and distributors to install an automatic headlight system on their motorcycles before selling them.
The “automatic headlight system” referred to in the proposal is a device that is designed to automatically turn on the motorcycle’s headlight as soon as the engine is started. This means that regardless of the time of day or weather conditions, the motorcycle’s headlight would remain illuminated while the engine is running.
The main objective of Olivarez’s proposal is to improve road safety, specifically for motorcycles. By mandating the use of headlights at all times, the proposal aims to increase the visibility of motorcycles on the road, which can potentially reduce the risk of accidents involving motorcycles.
With headlights turned on, motorcycles can be more easily seen by other motorists, pedestrians, and other road users, especially in low-light conditions or during unfavorable weather situations.
According to Olivarez, requiring motorcycles to keep their headlights on is a proactive measure that can contribute to reducing road accidents and improving overall road safety. With the rising number of motorcycle-related accidents and fatalities in the Philippines, he believes that this proposal could be an effective step toward addressing the issue.
However, the proposal has also been met with some concerns and criticisms. Some argue that it may increase the electricity consumption of motorcycles, leading to additional fuel consumption and environmental impacts.
Others raise concerns about the potential inconvenience for motorcycle riders who may prefer to have control over their motorcycle’s headlights, especially in certain situations where it may not be necessary to have the headlights on.
