9 Out of 10 Teachers Claim Students Struggle to Focus on Class Due to Extreme Heat

ACT Surveys Say Teachers Claim Students Struggle to Focus on Class Due to Hot Weather Condition

Almost 9 out of 10 teachers stated that students are having a hard time focusing on their classes due to the extreme heat, ACT says.

According to a survey conducted by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) from March 24 to 27, almost 9 out of 10 teachers claimed that students cannot concentrate well in class due to the intense heat caused by the hot weather.

The survey involved 11,000 teachers who provided their insights on the effects of the ongoing heatwave on their students’ performance.

ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua revealed that 87% of the surveyed teachers disclosed that their students have difficulties focusing on their lessons due to the excessive heat. This is a serious concern because it could affect their academic performance and progress in school.

Aside from this, the survey also found out that 37% of teachers said that the heat worsened their current medical condition, while 40% reported that their students were becoming more frequently absent from school.

The group has urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to find solutions to the problem, particularly if the agency has no plan to implement a break in April and May. The group has previously expressed concerns about the safety of students amid the rising temperatures in the country.

The DepEd has earlier announced that schools may suspend in-person classes and shift to blended learning if the hot weather conditions have a significant impact on students’ learning.

However, it is crucial for the DepEd to have a concrete plan in place to ensure the safety and well-being of the students during these challenging times.
