China Denies Allegation of PCG That Their Vessel Uses Laser Against PH Ship
China has strongly denied the allegation of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) that their Chinese vessel uses a laser against the Philippine ship.
Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, issued a statement refuting the PCG’s claim that they were recently targeted with a military-grade laser near Ayungin Shoal. Wenbin stated at a news conference this Wednesday that there was no laser-pointing incident with the crew of the BRP Malapascua on January 6 while they were on a resupply mission.
Explanation: According to Wenbin, the PCG ship crossed Chinese land, and thus the Chinese Coast Guard pimped them. The China Coast Guard ship employed a hand-held laser speed detector and a hand-held greenlight pointer during that operation to measure the distance and speed of the Philippine vessel and signal directives to ensure navigation safety, he said.
“We need to highlight the fact that the China Coast Guard ship did not direct lasers at the Philippine crew, and the hand-held equipment does not inflict damage on anything or anyone on the vessel,” the official added.
According to the report, a Chinese Coast Guard hit PCG’s BRP Malapascua with a green laser light, temporarily blinding its crew. This ship was on its way to Ayungin Shoal in the Spratly Islands.
Meanwhile, following China’s use of a military-grade laser against a PCG vessel in the disputed South China Sea last week, Canada has pledged its “unwavering” support for the Philippines. According to Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines David Hartman, China’s activities were “coercive,” impeding the “lawful” operations of the aforementioned PCG vessel.
