Following the negative reactions that she received, Donnalyn apologized and said that she has no intention of hurting anyone. Then, she showcased her old photos showing her “struggles” she went through in order to earn money.

Writer Bryle B. Suralta, the Assistant Section Editor of Esquire Philippines wrote an article about this. His article has the title “Donnalyn Bartolome and Her ‘Main Character Syndrome’ Just Couldn’t Help It.”

Clinical psychologist Ramani Durvasula, PhD, a professor emerita of psychology at California State University in Los Angeles and the author of Don’t You Know Who I Am?: How to Stay Sane in an Era of Narcissism, Entitlement, and Incivility, described this syndrome as an “intentional way that a person thinks of themself as the key player in their life and views it through a storytelling lens, like a movie or TV show.”

Suralta said that celebrities and those pseudo-celebrities are now indulging in the so-called “me, me, me” culture of this generation. They would tell the public to look and learn from them and that everything is just a matter of mindset.

The writer also said that it is understandable that Donnaly wanted to spread good vibes through her social media posts however, he said, “we prop these stories up for the simple fact that these are anomalies in the grand scheme of things.”

He pointed out that stories about people who struggled and with hard work and perseverance made it big are written because these stories are “one-or-two-in-10 million.” This means that it is not the situation all the time if not always.

The writer said that hard work is “not the only ingredient in this imaginary recipe for success.” He stressed that if this is the true barometer of success then, the richest people would be the “fisherfolk, nurses, teachers, construction workers, or service crew members.”
