P7 Million Giant Fish Ends Up on the Chopping Block After Alleged Resort Theft
ARAPAIMA – What was meant to be one of a resort’s prized attractions reportedly became dinner after three workers allegedly stole and slaughtered a P7 million arapaima.
Three employees of a resort in Quezon were arrested after they allegedly stole and butchered a rare arapaima valued at approximately P7 million. According to a police report, the incident occurred on Monday, July 6, at the Costa Solano Resort and Leisure Park in Barangay Bantigue.
Authorities stated that the suspects had secretly removed the massive freshwater fish from the resort’s fishpond before transporting it to a house located within the resort grounds. Investigators believe the workers butchered the rare fish with the intention of dividing the meat among themselves and eating it.
The alleged theft came to light after a witness reportedly saw the suspects cutting up the fish. The witness immediately informed the resort’s foreman and security guard about what was happening. Their prompt action led to the apprehension of the three employees, who were later turned over to the authorities for investigation and the filing of appropriate charges.
The stolen arapaima weighed around 90 kilograms, measured approximately 6.7 feet in length, and was estimated to be about 25 years old. Due to its rarity, size, and age, the fish was reportedly worth around P7 million, making the loss a significant one for the resort.
The arapaima is recognized as one of the largest freshwater fish species in the world. Native to the Amazon River basin in South America, the species is admired for its enormous size, impressive lifespan, and unique appearance. It has become a prized attraction in aquariums, private collections, and leisure parks because of its rarity and value.
Experts note that a fully grown arapaima can reach a weight of up to 200 kilograms and grow as long as 10 feet. Its remarkable size has earned it worldwide recognition as one of the giants of freshwater ecosystems.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while legal proceedings against the three resort workers are expected to move forward. Authorities have yet to release additional information regarding the charges that will be formally filed against the suspects.
