Personal Background

Born on November 14, 1948 in Buckingham Palace, Charles Philip Arthur George is the eldest child of the Duchess of Edinburgh who became Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Edinburgh who became Prince Philip. His paternal grandfather, King George VI, was reigning when he was born. In 1952, his mother succeeded his late grandfather which made him the heir apparent and the Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, Baron of Renfrew, and Lord of the Isles.

Charles is vocal that he did not enjoy school during his growing up years. According to him, it was because he was happier to be at home than anywhere else. There were instances when he broke royal tradition – like when he enrolled at a university than join the British Armed Forces after his A-levels.

Marriages

Charles married Lady Diana Spencer. However, even at the beginning of their relationship, there were claims that she was only awestruck by his position while he did not seem in love with her. Their relationship pushed further to marriage following an engagement in February 1981. In July of the same year, they officially tied the knot at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Their marriage is blessed with two (2) sons – Princes William and Harry.

However, the couple separated amid speculations of cheating on both sides. The separation came within five years since they married. She admitted falling in love with the family’s former riding instructor, James Hewitt, and accused Charles of a relationship with Camilla Parker. Diana died in a car accident in 1996.

In February 2005, Charles and Camilla got engaged. They wed in a civil ceremony which is the only record of a civil wedding by a royal in England.
