11-Year-Old Boy Dies Few Weeks After Circumcision Due to Tetanus

An 11-year-old boy passed away due to tetanus a few after his circumcision at a health center in Lupon, Davao Oriental.

A frustrated dad identified as Armando Ilisan has expressed his disappointment and fury to the municipal health center employees who circumcised his son named Lear John Ilisan. The young boy passed away three weeks after the circumcision.

Lear John underwent a circumcision last July 8, 2022, but experienced an illness two days after the operation. Unfortunately, the innocent boy even suffered lockjaw after a few days. The kid passed away last July 27.

“Sunday morning medyo ok pa siya. Tinawagan ko yung ang midwife sabi ko, ‘Maam parang tetanus yata tong bata.’ Mag-render pa rin tayo ng anti-tetanus. Pero naano niya yung tetanus lalong lumala,” Armando said.

However, the rural midwife who performed the operation identified as Angelina Uyanguren denied that she commit a mistake during the circumcision. She explained that there was nothing wrong with the boy’s manhood.

“Tiningnan ko ang tuli ng bata. Sinabihan ko ang magulang kung saan ba ako nagkamali. Saan banda, sabi ng ina ng bata, ‘Gumaling na pala.’ Sabi ko naman na may dala akong tetanus toxiod proteksyon ito para sa inyong anak, nagpaalam na rin ako sa papa ninyo,” Uyanguren said.

The victim’s cause of death was respiratory failure due to generalized tetanus based on his death certificate. The Department of Health will continue to investigate the incident.
