Silay City Mayoralty Candidate Joedith Gallego Faces Charges for Installing Campaign Posters on Trees

A mayoralty candidate in Silay City, Negros Occidental is currently facing charges for installing campaign posters on a trees.

Over the past few weeks, political candidates have been very busy with their campaign to convince more voters.  They were also posting campaign materials in public places to reach more people.

Recently, Silay City Tourism Office Staff and monitoring team member Joval Catanghal filed a case against Silay Mayoralty Candidate Joedith Gallego for installing his campaign posters on 24 trees in the town.

According to Catanghal, Gallego’s campaign materials were installed on 24 trees using nails. Campaign posters are located along the National Highway at Barangay Guinhalaran in the town of Silay.

Catangal explained that Gallego reportedly violated the law for using nails on trees just to install the tarpaulins. The case has been filed at Silay City Hall of Justice last Friday (March 18, 2022).

Gallego made a statement regarding the incident and believes that the case filed against him was “politically-motivated”. The file was case as campaign period in the city and Election 2022 approaches.

The politician is also looking at multiple angles regarding the case and defended himself against the accusations against him. The latter also believes that he did not violate the environmental law.

The candidate is currently facing 24 counts for violation of RA 3571 or An Act to Prohibit the Cutting, Destroying or Injuring of Planted or Growing Trees, Flowering Plants and Shrubs or Plants of Scenic Value Along Public Roads, in Plazas, Parks, School Premises or in Any Other Public Pleasure Ground.
