David Bennett, the First Pig Heart Transplant Patient Passes Away After Two Months

WASHINGTON – The first pig heart transplant patient has already passed away two months after the medical operation.

The 57-year-old David Bennett has passed away on March 8, 2022 within two months after receiving a heart transplant from a genetically modified pig. He had received his transplant on January 7, 2022.

The University of Maryland Medical System made the statement. The health institution conducts the procedure with the aim to solve the chronic shortage of human organs through cross-species organ donation.

The medical system stated that Bennett’s medical condition started to deteriorate a few days ago. He received compassionate palliative care but did not make it. Luckily, he was able talk to his family during the last moment of his life.

“His condition began deteriorating several days ago. After it became clear that he would not recover, he was given compassionate palliative care. He was able to communicate with his family during his final hours,” the statement said.

Initially, the transplant operation performed very well for several weeks. No signs of rejections have been noticed it only occurs nearly two month after the surgery.

Bartley Griffith, the surgeon who led the procedure commends David for being brave and trying to fight for his until the very end. Griffith has also expressed his condolences to the family.

“He proved to be a brave and noble patient who fought all the way to the end. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family,” Griffith said.

The patient is already bedridden and just relying on an emergency life support machine before he came the hospital in October 2021. The operation extends his life for a little bit longer.
