Pinay Entrepreneur Starts Filipino Sorbetes Business in Belgium

A Pinay business woman named Kamille Rodriguez together with her husband have started a “Sorbetes” business in Belgium.

In 2013, Kamille moved to Belgium to work as a part-time nurse at a hospital. Initially, she experienced hardships and difficulties working abroad due to the language barrier.

It took years before Rodriguez was able to adjust with the foreign culture and tradition. Eventually, she was able to catch up with her foreign friends and met the guy named Jelle through a dating website.

The couple tied the knot in 2016 and welcomed two children together. Jelle is working as a pastry chef prompting the couple to involve in a food industry. Ice cream is very popular in Belgium because of its climate.

Eventually, Kamille had the idea to bring the Philippines’ “dirty ice cream” or locally called “Sorbetes” to Belgium. She offered Filipino-inspired ice cream in a cart but transformed it into modern version.

“Naisip po namin na magbenta through the bike, para makakapunta kami kung nasan ang tao. Since we offered Filipino-inspired ice cream, nagpagawa ako ng design ng parang kariton ng ice cream ng Pilipinas pero modern version,” Kamille said.

The couple named the business “Sorbetes ni Manong Jelle” and the Filipino ice cream has finally reached the streets of Belgium. Sorbetes is available in various flavors including mango, buko pandan, and halo-halo.

They are also offering Rocky Road lavor and boasts of Davao chocolate as well as putting a spin on the ube cheese trend. Maja blanca and sapin-sapin were the most popular flavors.
