PH Government Speaks on New COVID-19 Surge

PH GOVERNMENT – Malacañang spoke on the possibility of placing Metro Manila under Alert Level 4 amid a new surge of COVID-19 cases.

The daily cases of COVID-19 recorded in Metro Manila go on an upward trend again. Thus, the national government decided to place it under Alert Level 3 which comes with stricter measures. The whole Metro Manila is under Alert Level 3 starting January 3-15, 2022.

The authorities cited the holiday activities of the people as a factor in the increase in the COVID-19 cases in the country. The implementation of the Alert Level 3 is also a fight against the spread of Omicron, a new variant of concern across the globe.

Recently, several hospitals admitted getting affected by the rise in the COVID-19 cases in the country. They are also worried about their workforce as many health workers are contracting the virus in the line of their duties.

Previously, the possibility of placing the whole Metro Manila under Alert Level 4 was raised by Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III. He stressed the utilization rate of the intensive care units (ICUs).

Malacañang also spoke on the possibility of placing Metro Manila under Alert Level 4. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, presidential spokesperson Karlo Nograles expressed that the PH government is ready to escalate Metro Manila under Alert Level 4 if the healthcare utilization rate goes beyond 70%.

Nograles stressed that the capital region remains to have a high daily attack rate, a high growth rate for two weeks, and a moderate hospitalization rate. He further expressed that the total bed utilization is “not hitting the metric yet”.

With regards to the possibility of placing Metro Manila under Alert Level 4, the presidential spokesperson stressed that the PH government continues to manage the situation by making sure that the healthcare system “is well enough” to respond to hospitalization needs.
