Pres. Duterte No Longer Running for Senator in 2022

DUTERTE – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) confirmed that Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte withdrew from the Senate race in 2022.

Before November 15, 2021, the deadline for substitutions of the candidacies in the Election 2022, several changes took place. Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte substituted a senatorial candidate of the ruling party, PDP-Laban Cusi wing, amid calls to run for a national position from his party.

Prior to the filing of the candidacy period, the 76-year-old President was set to run for vice president after accepting the nomination of his political party. However, during the period set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the filing of candidacy, he did not file his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for vice president but instead announced his retirement from politics.

According to the President, he will retire from politics after his term ends in June 2022. He also said that he will focus on his defense to the investigation of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC wants to probe the anti-drugs campaign of the current administration amid accusations linking it to some deaths in the country. The President stressed that he is willing to be imprisoned only upon the sentence of a Philippine Court.

The Senate bid of Pres. Duterte gained different reactions from the people and from his fellow political aspirants in the Election 2022. Recently, another unexpected change took place – the 76-year-old President withdrew his candidacy for senator.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Comelec confirmed that the President has filed his withdrawal of candidacy for senator. He personally went to the poll body’s office in Manila to file his withdrawal. He wants to retire from politics after his term in June 2022 ends.

The President is not allowed to seek re-election under the Constitution. As of this writing, he has yet to personally speak about his decision. More updates may be posted soon.
