Canada Records Surge in COVID-19 Cases in Ontario

CANADA – The government decided to suspend the lifting of the restrictions supposedly set ahead of the holidays.

South Africa recently detected a new variant of COVID-19. Reported as a “heavily mutated” variant, the World Health Organization (WHO) named it Omicron. The international body warned countries to boost efforts to prevent the entry and spread of the said variant of the virus.

Several nations were quick to implement travel measures on travelers from countries that recorded cases of the Omicron variant. Studies and monitoring of the behavior of the said variant are ongoing now.

One of the countries that recorded cases of the Omicron variant is Canada. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, a community spread of the said variant is happening in Ontario.

The total population in Ontario is around 40% of the 39 million people in Canada. Thus, a health authority posted a warning on the possible surge of the COVID-19 cases in the country.

To prevent the surge, the national government decided to suspend the lifting of the restrictions in the country. Supposedly, the easing of restrictions was set ahead of the holidays.

Based on the report as per CTV News, all the government employees in Ontario who gradually returned to their offices in November were ordered to go back to a work-from-home setup at least until early February. Public health chief Theresa Tam that she expects to see the situation in Ontario in other areas of the country.

Tam further expressed that they are seeing community transmission at an early age. According to her, it can further spread in the days to come. She recommends to boost the healthcare system of the country by hiring more healthcare workers, boosting the technology and governance, and providing more stable funds.
