DOH OKs Booster Shots for Senior Citizens, Immunocompromised Individuals

DOH Speaks on Booster Shots for A2, A3 Categories

DOH – The Department of Health gave its approval on the giving of COVID-19 booster shots for senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals.

The vaccination against COVID-19 is ongoing in most countries across the globe including the Philippines. A prioritization ladder is followed in the process of vaccinating the people.

The top priority in the COVID-19 vaccination is the A1 category composed of healthcare workers. Considered as the frontliners in the fight against the pandemic and the most exposed to the virus, a huge population of health workers are now fully-vaccinated. Some of them have also received the booster shots already.

Many health workers expressed their eagerness to receive the booster shot for added protection against the COVID-19. While the vaccine reportedly cannot give 100% protection from getting infected, experts say that it can help prevent the worst scenarios.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Department of Health (DOH) has given its approval on the giving of booster shots for senior citizens and individuals with co-morbidities who are fully vaccinated against the COVID-19. The giving of booster shots will start today, November 22.

According to DOH, the fully-vaccinated senior citizens and the immunocompromised individuals are eligible for the COVID-19 booster shot regardless of the brand of the vaccine they have taken as their primary shots. Based on the report, the Health Department further said that those belonging to the A3 category or the immunocompromised individuals will be given priority for the first phase of the rollout of the vaccines.

The A3 category includes individuals who are in an immunodeficiency state, living with HIW, have active cancer of malignancy, transplant patients, and patients under immunosuppressive treatments. According to the Health Department, phases will be observed in the implementation of the booster shots.

Phase 1 will cover the senior citizens (A2) and the immunocompromised individuals (A3) and phase 2 is for the remaining population of the individuals with co-morbidities.
