“Marites” has become a famous name online
This is how the name Marites became a meme for “chismosa” on social media and netizens have been using this to refer to those who love to make “sawsaw” in whatever issue online.
In the age of social media, people, who are now called netizens, have more freedom to speak their thoughts and opinions. Just recently, netizens feasted on the issue surrounding the breakup of celebrity couple Kylie Padilla and Aljur Abrenica. A lot of Marites came out.
The term, based on the article in The Philippine Star Lifestyle, basically refers to “gossipy tita next door” who loves to spread juicy rumors to her neighbors. It was said that this term has no exact known origin but it has started to circulate in the early part of the pandemic in 2020.
The line “Manahimik ka, Marites” trended on social media and it came from a netizen’s reply to the comment of a certain netizen with that name. The said comment was posted on a statement by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno saying that the liquor ban will not be implemented in the city.
Now, netizens on various social media platforms have been using this term as part of the meme about gossipers or those who are waiting for juicy rumors to be talked about, especially if it is about the lives of celebrities.
In a recent Facebook post of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, she also used this term. The said post was about her answer to Mon Tulfo’s “Plan C” article. Mayor Sara slammed the columnist for the “chismis” that he wrote in his column.
