The term, based on the article in The Philippine Star Lifestyle, basically refers to “gossipy tita next door” who loves to spread juicy rumors to her neighbors. It was said that this term has no exact known origin but it has started to circulate in the early part of the pandemic in 2020.

The line “Manahimik ka, Marites” trended on social media and it came from a netizen’s reply to the comment of a certain netizen with that name. The said comment was posted on a statement by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno saying that the liquor ban will not be implemented in the city.
