DOH Confirms 1st Case of the COVID-19 Lambda Variant in the Philippines

DOH – The Department of Health spoke on the first case of the Lambda variant of COVID-19 in the Philippines.

The battle against the COVID-19 pandemic undeniably calls for a more intensified fight following the detection of new variants of the disease. Travel restrictions are up in the country now in the pursuit to contain their spread.

In the Philippines, several variants were detected including the Delta variant which was first recorded in India. The said variant of concern caused the healthcare system of India to collapse as patients flocked in hospitals. Its higher transmissibility caused alarms.

The Delta variant was also logged in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, the United States, and several other nations. In PH, travel bans is now up on travelers from the said nations.

Recently, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed another case of a variant of interest in PH – the Lambda variant. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, studies found that the said variant which was first recorded in Peru has a higher transmissibility rate and is resistant to vaccines compared to the original virus.

The DOH said that the first case of the Lambda variant in the Philippines is a 35-year-old woman who has already recovered from COVID-19. She went into isolation for 10 days. The health department did not specify whether it is a local case or a returning overseas Filipino (ROF).

According to DOH, contact tracing is ongoing now. It was in June 14 when the World Health Organization (WHO) identified the Lambda variant as a variant of interest.

Currently, the whole Metro Manila and several provinces in the Philippines are under ECQ or Enhanced Community Quarantine. The vaccination continues amid the ECQ measure thus those who are set to receive their vaccine are allowed to go out.
