Phivolcs Lowered Alert Status of Mt. Pinatubo to ‘Zero’ or Normal
The state seismology bureau Phivolcs has lifted the alert status of Mt. Pinatubo from low-level unrest (level 1) to normal (zero).
On Thursday (August 12, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has released latest update regarding Mount Pinatubo. The agency has lowered Pinatubo’s status to zero due to the continuous decline of unrest.
From July 1 to August 11, 2021, a total of 104 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded by the volcanology agency at Pinatubo. It is equivalent to an average of two to three events per day with magnitudes ranging from 0.3 to 1.3.
Last March, Mt. Pinatubo has been placed under Alert Level 1 due to the persistence of seismic activity. The volcano shows a persistent decline in earthquake activities and a return to baseline seismic parameters.
“In view of the above, Phivolcs-DOST is now lowering the alert status of Pinatubo Volcano from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 0. This means observational parameters have returned to baseline levels and the volcano has returned to a period of quiescence,” Phivolcs said.
Phivolcs continues to monitor the volcano and explained that if any increase of unrest or irregularities have been detected, the alert status may step up again to Alert Level 1.
The volcanology agency also reminded the public that the entry into the permanent danger zone remains prohibited. Residents entering into Pinatubo’s Crater area should observe precautionary measures.
The volcano could still cause perennial hazards of rockfalls, landslides and expulsions of lethal volcanic CO2. During prolonged and heavy rainfall, possible sediment-laden stream flows and lahars.
