Tropical Storm Dante to Generate Lahar in Vicinities Near Taal & Pinatubo, According to Phivolcs

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs said that volcanoes such as Taal and Pinatubo would produce lahar and muddy streamflows due to Tropical Storm Dante.

On Wednesday (June 2, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has released the latest updates about Taal Volcano and Pinatubo Volcano. Those volcanoes would be affected by the Tropical storm Dante.

Phivolcs said that Tropical storm Dante may cause volcanic sediment flows and muddy streamflows along the vicinities of Taal Volcano and Mount Pinatubo. The rivers and drainages near the vicinity of those two volcanoes will be affected.

The seismology bureau that the prolonged and intense rainfall may trigger non-eruption volcanic sediment flows or lahar in western Pinatubo.

“Pinatubo lahars will likely be channel-confined and occur on the upper to the middle reaches of the Sto. Tomas-Marella and Bucao River systems,” Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs explained that the event may result to muddy stream flows over the towns of San Marcelino, San Narciso, San Felipe, and Botolan in Zambales. The muddy stream flows will also affected Tarlac and Pampanga.

The volcanology agency also advised the residents in the affected areas to take precautionary measures against the tropical storm.
