Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano. It is well-known for its infamous eruption in June 15, 1991. It is, by far, the second largest eruption of the 20th century, with the first being the eruption in Novarupta.

The situation worsened when typhoon Diding, internationally named Yunya, brought a lethal mix of ash and rain to the nearby surrounding cities.

It is known in different dialects as:

  • Sambal – Bakil nin Pinatobo
  • Kapampangan – Bunduk/Bulkan ning Pinatubu, Bunduk ning Apu Malyari
  • Pangasinan – Palandey/Bulkan na Pinatubu
  • Ilocano – Bantay Pinatubo
  • Tagalog – Bundok o Bulkang Pinatubo

The mountain is said to be born in 33,000 BC via its ancestor’s cataclysmic and most explosive eruptions, which are 5 times larger than its infamous 1991 eruption.

Where is it located?

Pinatubo is located in the three point boundaries in Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga, but mainly in Zambales since it is part of the Zambales Mountain Ranges.

The mountain is also surrounded by dense forests, which are home of thousands of indigenous Aetas.
