Phivolcs Releases Latest Update on Mt. Pinatubo
The state volcanology Phivolcs raised alert level 1 in Mt. Pinatubo due to the increasing seismic activities in the volcano.
On Thursday (March 4, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released the latest update about Mt. Pinatubo. The seismology agency raised alert level 1 in Mt. Pinatubo due to persistence of seismic activity.
Phivolcs said that no imminent eruption is expected but individuals who wanted to enter the Pinatubo Crater area must observe extreme caution. The agency also advised the public to avoid if it is possible.
The seismology bureau also warned the local government units and residents to expect for possible earthquake and volcanic hazards. The local government has been also preparing disaster preparedness plans for any unexpected incidents.
Phivolcs bulletin also shows that the agency recorded 1,722 “imperceptible earthquakes” around Pinatubo since January 20, 2021.
“This has been succeeded by a more persistent cluster of earthquakes occurring along a north-northwest-south-southeast-trending structure 10 to 35 kilometers beneath the center of the edifice itself, with a few shallower earthquakes occurring on both ends of the cluster,” Phivolcs said.
