NDRRMC Says 500, 000 Residents to Evacuate In Case of Violent Eruption in Taal Volcano

NDRRMC Prepares Evacuation of Over 500, 000 Residents In Case of Violent Eruption in Taal Volcano

NDRRMC is preparing for the possible evacuation of over 500, 000 residents if Taal Volcano generates violent eruption.

On Saturday (July 10, 2021), the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Ricardo Jalad reported that over 500, 000 residents would evacuate if violent eruption occurs.

The agency is now preparing the areas within the 14-kilometer danger zone for possible eruptions. Taal Volcano might emit poisonous gas, volcanic tsunami, and falling debris, which is quite harmful for residents.

Violent Eruption

The municipalities and cities of Batangas, including part of Tagaytay and Lemeryare are expected to be affected by possible eruption.

“Based sa risk assessment, kung sakali na magkaroon ng violent eruption, sa risk map na ginawa ng PHIVOLCS, ang estimate na ililikas mula sa municipalities and cities of Batangas, including part of Tagaytay at Lemery, ay half a million,” Jalad said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recommended to prioritize five barangays Laurel and Agoncillo as well as other areas near Taal Island.
