However, whenever he was asked during interviews about his 2022 election plans, he would consistently dodge the question and divert the topic to the pandemic which people must put their focus on. In the middle of the pandemic, talks about politics accordingly has no place as per his statement. And with his plans rising online, retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio expressed he sees him not fit for the said position because he “lacks competence” which is a basic qualification for a leader.

He cited that Pacquiao is the “number 1 absentee, a topnotcher in absences in Congress” and the same case as well in the Senate which is why his 1Sambayan won’t endorse him. He even added, “Manny Pacquiao may have a good heart, but running the country of 110 million people requires competence”.

In a report from ABS-CBN, Pacman reacted to this and clarified his poor attendance. He elaborated that his absences are not his intentions and wants but a need, in his case. He stressed that despite his absences, his contributions as a legislator such as co-authoring bills on the Free Internet Access Program and the Expanded Maternity Leave “can speak for itself”.

“Ang panawagan ko lang po kay former Justice Antonio Carpio, ay sana’y mabigyan niyo po ako ng pagkakataong maipakilala ang tunay na Manny Pacquiao,” he said. He also noted to himself that what Carpio said about him will serve as a reminder for him to do better being a public servant and a servant of God. To recall, in a Presidential Preference survey, he is among the top preferred presidential candidates.
