Malacañang Reacts To Criticisms on Pres. Duterte Tagging Red Cross as “Mukhang Pera”

Malacañang defended President Rodrigo Roa Duterte over his “mukhang pera” statement against the Philippine Red Cross.

Recently, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or more commonly called as PhilHealth and the Philippine Red Cross were hooked in money issues. It is over the P1.1 billion debt of PhilHealth to PRC.

Red Cross previously stopped the swab testing of returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and the individuals covered by the guidelines of the Department of Health (DOH) due to the said non-payment of PhilHealth.

Senator Richard Gordon wants PhilHealth investigated for its non-payment to Red Cross. Several government agencies’ operation were affected by the issue between the two.

The issue between PhilHealth and Red Cross reached Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Previously, he said that he will pay for the balance of the health insurance agency to PRC.

PhilHealth made an initial payment of Php 500 million to Red Cross. It was after the set deadline for the payment. The latter resumed its operation on COVID-19 testing.

Recently, PhilHealth paid Red Cross P100-million more leaving the balance to between Php 300 to Php 400 million. The state-run health insurance agency assured that they are speeding up the processes for the payment.

In his recent late-night briefing, Pres. Duterte tagged Red Cross as “mukhang pera” or greedy. To this, Sen. Gordon said that the Chief Executive “should really be careful”.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Malacañang defended Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte over his “mukhang pera” statement to Red Cross. According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the Chief Executive must be allowed to say what he wants to say.

“Let’s allow na lang the President to say what he wants to say, and let that remain on record,” Roque said.
