Malacañang Explains Why Duterte Was Alarmed About Deleted Pages on Facebook

MALACAÑANG – The Palace spoke on President Rodrigo Roa Duterte calling out Facebook after it has taken down some social media pages.

Facebook is undeniably one of the most popular social media sites not only in the United States and in the Philippines but across the globe. Many people from different races, ages, and preferences in life got accounts in the said social media platform.

Some netizens even put up pages for the people they are supporting like celebrities in showbiz and politicians. There are also those that use the platform for entertainment.

However, undeniably, some negative scenarios have also taken place in Facebook. It prompted the people behind the social media giant to monitor the behavior of the accounts and implement new rules.

Recently, Facebook took down some pages based on the behavior of the page. It included some pages that, according to Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, the government uses to spread its advocacy.

The President reacted to it. In his recent late-night televised address, he called out Facebook and questioned its existence in the country if it cannot help the government.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Malacañang said that Pres. Duterte was alarmed when he found out that the page “Hands Off Our Children” was taken down by Facebook. According to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, it is a page that fights groups that recruit kids.

According to the report, Malacañang called the move of Facebook to take down the “pro-government” pages as “censorship” or an act of suppressing a body.

“Hindi issue ang fake news ngayon. Ang issue ngayon eh, anong epekto ng pagtatanggal ng pages na yan?” the Presidential Spokesman said.

Roque raised a question on why pro-government pages are taken down while those of the opposition remains. He encouraged the netizens whose pages were taken down to take thee issue to the court to check on its ruling.
