The atmosphere is a group or layers of gasses which surrounds the planet or any material body. It is about 300 miles or 480 kilometers thick. Most of the atmosphere is within 10 miles or 16 kilometers from the earth’s surfacce.

The atmosphere is composed of the following layers:

  • Troposphere
  • Stratosphere
  • Mesosphere
  • Thermosphere
  • Ionospere
  • Exosphere
  • Magnetosphere

By far, the earth is the only planet in the solar system with an atmosphere that can sustain life. Not only does this contains the air that we breathe but also protects us from the blasts of heat and radiation which is emanating from the sun.

Components

According to Space , it is composed of the following elements:

  • Nitrogen — 78 percent;
  • Oxygen — 21 percent;
  • Argon — 0.93 percent;
  • Carbon dioxide — 0.04 percent; and
  • Trace amounts of neon, helium, methane, krypton and hydrogen, as well as water vapor.
