Manila Day (June 24) Declared A Non-Working Holiday – Palace

MANILA DAY – The Malacañang Palace has recently declared June 24, which is Manila Day, a special non-working holiday.

This is in order to allow its residents to celebrate Metro Manila’s 449th founding anniversary, according to PhilStar.

This declaration is part of Proclamation No. 969 that was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea under the authority of President Rodrigo Duterte on June 19.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies, subject to community quarantine, social distancing, and other public health,”

The capital city was founded on June 24, 1571 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish explorer and governor.

Based on the report, the event’s first commemoration under Mayor Isko Moreno will be spearheaded by the department of tourism, culture and arts in the city. This will also be in lieu with the government’s desire to recognize the bravery and dedication of frontliners in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since its a special non-working holiday, this would mean that workforce will not receive any pay unless there is a favorable company policy, according to. If the employee reported for work, he or she will be paid an additional 30% of their regular rate, according to StraightArrow.
