Cayetano Says ABS-CBN Franchise Hearing Will Begin Next Week
ABS-CBN – House speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said the hearing on ABS-CBN’s 25-year franchise will begin next week.
The largest tv network in the Philippines, ABS-CBN, went off the air on May 5, 2020. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said the company committed several “violations.”
Its employees and loyal viewers were shocked by its untimely closure. Several celebrities immediately took to their social media accounts to express their concern for 11,000 workers who just lost their jobs amid the 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic.
Groups and netizens blamed Congress for not acting on the Kapamilya network’s franchise bill. It has been on the House of Representatives for months but was put on hold due to the pandemic.
House authors sent a letter to House speaker Alan Peter Cayetano asking him to start the hearing. When started working on ABS-CBN’ franchise issue, critic lawyer Larry Gadon said the speaker was allegedly railroading the bill.
Gadon even called for Cayetano’s resignation for leading his fellow congressmen to commit such violation. He said the speaker should have given all the lawmakers a time to review the bill.
Recently, Alan Peter Cayetano’s office released a statement regarding ABS-CBN’s franchise bill. The photo was shared on Inquirer’s Twitter account. In the press release statement, the speaker said the hearing will on granting the media network 25-year franchise will begin next week.
