DOTr Apologizes – The Department of Transportation issued an apology for its post stating “Thank You Coronavirus” after it created confusion.

The agency shared early on Monday on its official social media accounts a video of Polish vocalist and writer Riya Sokol. Based on the report from GMA News Online, the post has this caption: “THANK YOU CORONAVIRUS. Thank you for shaking us and showing we’re dependent on something much bigger than we think.”

This created confusion to some netizens amid the situation that hundreds of people are now infected in the Philippines. In a statement, the transportation department clarifies that they aimed to “provide an enlightening and awakening narrative into this pandemic.”

DOTr apologizes also if this showed insensitivity to some people. “We acknowledge that not all of our audience appreciate the underlying message of the poem and video, and we understand that some view it as an insensitive act. For that, we sincerely apologize,” the agency stated.

Additionally, DOTr said that the video was shared as it teaches everyone to appreciate “what really matters” amid this trying time, based on the report.

“The poem and video [have] gone viral because it presents a different perspective, one which gives humanity a reflective pause and [appreciates] what really matters in our lives,” the post stated.

DOTr said that in the end, they decided to take down the post. “We have decided to delete the post altogether in both our Facebook and Twitter accounts, as a prudent move to avoid confusion,” the department stated.

As of the afternoon of March 23, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines has already reached 462.
