PNP Asks DOH to Provide Protective Gear for Cops Conducting COVID-19 Checkpoints

The Philippine National Police is asking for protective gear for police officers conducting the COVID-19 checkpoints across Metro Manila.

On Monday (March 16, 2020), PNP is asking the Department of Health to provide protective equipment for the cops conducting checkpoints across the Metro Manila during the month-long quarantine due to the coronavirus disease.

PNP Chief Gen. Archie Gamboa said that the police spent its own funds to provide face masks and gloves to police personnel assigned to man 47 checkpoints in the National Capital Region. However, the funds are limited and they could not provide protective gear anymore.

“Kami-kami muna ang nag-produce ng aming gamit, but we have a pending request with the Department of Health kasi ang pera limited on the part of the different agencies, We just need face mask and gloves… Kailangan pa nga dapat ng goggles, rain coat. Pero immediately kasi, we have to implement, hindi naman kasi ito puwedeng hintayin lahat,” Gamboa said.

Health Assistant Secretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the inter-agency task force will have a meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss the distribution of protective gear to cops and soldiers at checkpoints.

Meanwhile, Vergeire advised the police officers to observe social distancing when checking travelers.
