Class Suspension in 2 Leyte Towns Due to Earthquake (March 2)

WALANG PASOK – Two municipalities in the province of Leyte have declared class suspension after struck by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake.

On Monday (March 2, 2020), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck several parts of the Visayas around 5:19 a.m. The quake was moderately strong.

Intensity 5 was felt in Tacloban City and Pastrana in Leyte, Intensity 4 Palo town and Ormoc City in Leyte; and Naval in Biliran and Borongan City in Eastern Samar. Intensity 2 Bogo City in northern Cebu, and intensity 1 in Masbate and Roxas Cities.

The moderately strong tremor is tectonic in origin and has a depth of 13 kilometers. It is also expected to generate aftershocks.

Recently, the local government unit of Carigara town, Leyte has declared class cancellation at all levels due to the effects of the earthquake.  Saint Peter’s College in Ormoc City also suspended the classes at all levels.

Staff Jennilyn Tuano of Capoocan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said that the cancellation of classes has been made to allow authorities to check and inspect the schools after school buildings in Barangay Pinamopoan, Capoocan town, sustained minor cracks.
